What is Sensory Play and should I be doing it?

Is sensory play just another TikTok trend to make us feel like we’re not doing enough? Or is it actually important for our babies and little ones? 🤔

When I first learned about sensory activities, I was in college nearly 10 years ago doing my childcare course. I didn’t expect it to become such a big online thing — but here we are, with rice bins, jelly trays, and themed play setups everywhere you scroll. 🍚🍇🎨

So… is sensory play really important?

Yes! ✅ Sensory play is super valuable for your child’s development and sensory growth. But here’s the good news: it doesn’t have to be expensive, fancy, or complicated. What really matters is how your child interacts with what you give them — that’s where the magic happens. ✨

Why Does Sensory Play Matter? 🧠

Sensory play helps wake up different parts of your baby’s or child’s brain — helping new connections form. Think of it like building bridges inside their little heads! 🌉🧩

If you love your child (and I know you do! 💕), you’re probably already giving them what they need — attention, hugs, and lots of time to explore their world. 🌎

If you want to add a bit more sensory fun, here’s how to get started.

How Can You Do Sensory Play? 🎉

You can begin from day one (after you’ve had a chance to rest, of course!). I like to group sensory activities into categories — it helps me see what kind of learning is happening. 📚

Here’s a quick peek at some of them:

  • Thinking and problem-solving

  • Building language and communication 🗣️

  • Fine motor skills (using fingers and hands) 🤲

  • Big movements (like crawling and walking) 🏃‍♀️

  • Exploring senses (touch, sight, sound, smell, and taste) 👀👂👃👅

  • Social and emotional growth ❤️

  • Creativity and imagination 🎨

  • Early reading and math skills (for older kids) 🔢📖

To help you understand these categories better, I’ve created a free printable flashcards set that explains each sensory play group clearly. You can grab your copy here 👉 [link to freebie].

Sensory Play for Special Needs Kids 💙

Every child is unique, especially children with special needs. Sensory play can be adapted so everyone can join in and have fun. 🤗

For example, at the beach, some little ones might love feeling the sand, while others might find it tricky. You can start small — maybe a soft towel with just a little sand or some water play first. 🏖️🌊

If your child uses a wheelchair or has physical challenges, don’t worry — there are lots of ways to join in sensory fun. Think raised trays, textured toys, and sounds from the ocean. ♿🐚

Sensory play for tiny babies or for disabled babies.

Here at Summer’s Sensory & Co, we understand the importance of sensory play — and now, so do you 💛. But let’s be honest: it can feel scary or overwhelming to do sensory play with tiny babies — especially if they have medical needs, physical disabilities, or use things like feeding or oxygen tubes.

But all babies — including disabled babies — deserve the chance to explore, connect, and feel joy through play. Sensory play isn’t just messy trays or fancy setups. It’s how babies begin to understand the world. From the feel of a soft blanket to the sound of your voice, babies are constantly soaking up sensory information. These gentle experiences support:

🧠 Brain development – Every new texture, sound, or movement helps build neural pathways
👁️ Body awareness – Babies begin to learn where their body ends and the world begins
🤲 Bonding – Sensory play with you builds connection and helps babies feel safe
😌 Regulation – Gentle sensory input (like rocking, soft lights, or humming) can soothe and settle

Whether your baby is neurotypical, disabled, born early, or medically complex — sensory play can be tailored to meet their needs and comfort levels. Even the smallest moments count.

Think: a soft scarf to feel, a song to listen to, a mirror to explore. These little moments matter — they lay the foundations for comfort, curiosity, and confidence.

I like to choose a theme — this month, it was the beach! 🏝️ We read books, learned new words (both in English and Dutch 🇬🇧🇳🇱), and did simple sensory activities.

Sometimes I plan big activities, but mostly I keep a list handy and pick what fits the day. ✔️

Tip: Repeating activities is amazing! Doing something twice or more helps your little one’s brain build strong connections. 🔄🧠
